Elegantly Coping With Space Constraints: Y House in Japan

On Freshome, we are constantly overwhelmed with the creativity of Japanese architects. Usually located in a crowded urban environment, their projects must respond to the extreme constraints of space. The incredible Y-House by IDEAoffice is situated in Saitama, a city just 30 kilometres north of Tokyo. The owners of the residence wanted a place that would guarantee a high level of privacy, while in the same time making sure that every room got a large amount of natural light. The result was a three-floor sustainable home with a practical outdoor terrace which adds more living space. All rooms point to the central private garden, having no awkward contact with neighbors. The interiors are highly modern and suited for a family home. How’s this for coping with urban density? Photos: Kouichi Torimura.- via Space Invading
